Dear Friend:

During the seven years of the “peace process” following the Oslo agreement between Israel and the PLO, the Palestinian areas in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem have become apartheid ghettoes — impoverished, isolated and brutalized. The Al-Aqsa intifada is the inevitable, adamant rejection of these conditions. The Palestinians are suffering horribly for their defiance. Over 340 have been killed in 3 months, overwhelmingly unarmed civilian victims of live ammunition fired by Israeli troops, with 9,000 injured including 1,500 permanently disabled, in a population of 3 million. Palestinian medical resources have been exhausted. Contributions are tax-deductible, and all proceeds will benefit the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Committees, a non-governmental Palestinian NGO with an extensive network of health care facilities in the West Bank and Gaza Strip (see http://www.upmrc.org) and other Palestinian charities. Please contribute generously for your ticket, or consider an advertisement in the program booklet, or make a contribution if you cannot attend.

Simon Shaheen is an internationally acclaimed performer, composer and scholar of classical Arabic music, and of classical Western, jazz and other musical forms. A virtuoso on the oud and the violin, he has performed extensively around the world, including featured perfor-mances at Carnegie Hall in New York and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., on whose advisory board he sits. He has recorded six CDs, which include many of his own works, and has composed extensively for film and theater. Qantara includes musicians of diverse backgrounds, and plays a fusion of Arabic, jazz and other music.
