WHAT: Slide Presentation and Fundraising Dinner for Palestinian refugees in
Lebanon
WHO: Andrew Courtney, documentary photographer, will take viewers on a graphic journey into the lives of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, formally known worldwide as the "Forgotten Ones". His exhibition will highlight the deplorable conditions they face in Lebanon and, hopefully, succeed in collecting funding on their behalf.
Humanitarian fact-finding trip to Lebanon Background information:
A six member delegation of Al-Awda-NY-NJ members will take a trip to Lebanon on February 2nd with the expressed purpose of making in-depth visits to the Palestinian refugee camps. The delegation, which will be hosted by Al Najdeh and by ARCPA (Arab Resource Center for Popular Arts), will embark on this exploratory trip with the hope of witnessing first hand the deplorable conditions of the camps and interviewing Palestinian refugees who have festered in squalid refugee camps since 1948.
Two documentary film-makers will accompany the delegation with the intention of creating a film which will offer viewers an objective, close-up portrait of the unparalleled misery camp-life has presented the downtrodden Palestinians since 1948. At this moment in world events, The 53 year old plight of the Palestinian refugee community is at a crucial juncture in popular attention and in so called "peace negotiations".
One of the delegation's
responsibilities is to bring back the evidence, the narrative, and the realities
of the refugee experience from a direct personal perspective. The film documentary
of this experience will be used to raise consciousness and funding in the regions
of our activities here in the U.S. Each delegate and film maker will be financing
his own trip. Prior to departure we wish to raise money to be used for purchasing
needed classroom furniture and teaching materials in Ein El-Hilweh and Nahr
el-Bared refugee camps in Lebanon. Your support is needed.
